Remington Keratin & Argan Oil Nourish Straightening brush by Lena Talks Beauty

Hair straightening brushes have burst onto the scene over the last year or so, and they’re something I’ve been quite interested in. My hair is very thick – every hairdresser ever exclaims over it – so I don’t often straighten my hair. I have a pair of hair straighteners but I got them for my 16th birthday so they’re a bit behind the times with technological innovations. I love how my hair looks straight, it just takes far too long for my liking. THEN I was given the opportunity to try the new Remington Keratin & Argan Oil Nourish Straightening Brush *. So of course I jumped at the offer. Straight hair in less time? Sign me up! Keep reading to see pictures of the brush, the results and read my thoughts.

Here’s what Remington themselves have to say about their straightening brush.

New to the Nourish range, the Remington Keratin & Argan Oil Nourish Straightening Brush is designed to make creating shiny, silky straight hair a breeze – in minutes. Featuring ceramic bristles infused with Keratin and Argan oil, locks are simultaneously styled and nourished, providing strong, healthy, shiny hair, even when you’re short on time. Keratin works to restore hair, while repairing and enhancing shine, while Argan oil helps to nourish locks and reduce frizz as hair passes through the brush. The Straightening Brush also features closely positioned ceramic bristles which provides maximum coverage to hair for straight, smooth results. Plus, its narrow edging ensures you’re able get closer to your roots whilst protecting your scalp and fingers from heat.

The Remington straightening brush is pretty straight forward to use. You plug it in, and there are three temperature settings from 150-230 degrees celsius (300-445 fahrenheit). It only takes 30 seconds to get to temperature, which adds to the convenience factor.

A closer look at the Remington Nourish Straightening brush

The ‘paddle’ part of the brush is quite decently sized, much wider than the plates of my hair straighteners. That meant it covered more area more easily, getting through my hair quicker. I don’t really know enough about the science of hair straighteners to comment on the effects of the argan oil and keratin. My understanding on how it supposedly works is pretty vague but I’d be interested to find out more. Is it legit? Is it a gimmick? Who knows.

The before photo

In my before photo my hair isn’t particularly wavy, but when it’s freshly washed it can have some serious waves to it. It also seems to love to get tangled, so before I got started with the straightening brush I had to use my actual hairbrush. The Tangle Teezer* is pretty much the only hairbrush I ever use. It gets tangles out with minimal effort and leave my hair looking fabulous.  Since my hair is so thick I separated it into layers to straighten it, otherwise the ‘bristles’ of the straightening brush would never reach the bottom layers.

When I’m using hot styling tools on my hair I always use heat protection products. The Toni and Guy Prep Hair Protection Mist is my current one, and I just purchased it on a whim. To be honest I’m not entirely sure how they work, I just know they’re a thing you must use. Any hairdressers out there care to shed some light on this for me? Also, please just pretend you can’t see my dark roots and the questionably orange home-bleached underneath layers. Scroll on quickly.

Make sure you’re careful when using the brush, because I managed to touch my ear with it – ow! Unlike normal flat irons, the hot part is exposed. I think it’s probably because I was multi-taking by having to use my camera remote. Stay vigilant though. The brush moved smoothly through my hair and I only had to go through most sections once.

Using the Remington straightening brush

According to the time stamps on the photos, this took me 17 minutes but than included a fair bit of fiddling with camera settings and posing. It’s tempting to just brush through your hair like a normal hairbrush, but it’s much more effective to do it in small sections like a traditional hair straightener. My hair wasn’t quite dead straight like it is when the hairdresser does it, but I was pleased nonetheless. I don’t know what kind of magic hairdressers have to work to get it pin straight. Are there classes people like me can take?!….I digress. As you can see below, my hair was definitely a lot smoother and straighter.

The finished product

Over all, I was pretty pleased with the Remington straightening brush. Next time I use it, I think I’ll divide my hair into even more sections and bump up the temperature. I used it on the middle setting this time, and maybe a bit more heat will get that pin-straight look I’m after. The big question is, would I buy it myself? I think I would. It was easy to use, and I liked the results. Price wise, it’s positioned in about the middle of the pack of other straightening brushes on the NZ market. I haven’t tried any of the others so I can’t compare on performance. My friends at Laura Loves Beauty Blog, and Hyacinth Girl have reviewed this too, so check that out.
