MAC Velvet Teddy + Whirl

MAC Velvet Teddy lipstick and Whirl lip pencil have been hot property for a while now, primarily thanks to Kylie Jenner. For me, the reason I was inspired to buy these is actually due to Youtuber Brittney Lee Saunders. Velvet Teddy is her go-to lipstick and whenever I saw her wearing it I would say to myself ‘I really should buy that’. Then recently I was at NZ Fashion Weekend and there was a MAC stall…so of course I popped in and finally laid eyes on Velvet Teddy in person, and the rest is history! I got the Whirl lip pencil as well because the MAC makeup artist applied the two of them together for me, and it looked so nice that I couldn’t resist. I truly am a salesperson’s dream!

Before we get into it, here I am with Jordanne from A Little Pinch of Wonder at MAC at NZ Fashion Weekend.
Velvet Teddy lipstick
Here it is, in all it’s glory. Velvet Teddy is described by MAC as a ‘deep tone beige’ and it is a matte finish. It is quite a pinky beige, not too ‘concealer lips’ like many lipsticks in that category can be.
Whirl lip pencil
Until recently, I hadn’t really got into lip liner, or lip pencil as MAC calls this. I think I thought it was a bit dated, but I have to give credit to Kylie Jenner for bringing it in to wear all over your lips. I haven’t got on board with the overdrawing that came along with that (if I wanted my lips to look like hers I’d get fillers like she does) but a lip colour in pencil form is something I like nowadays. MAC describes Whirl as a ‘dirty rose’ and whilst I might day dusky, it’s a pretty accurate description.
Here are swatches of both Whirl and Velvet Teddy. For context, my skin tone is around NW20 in MAC foundation
This is how the two look combined, worn on my lips.
I like this Whirl and Velvet Teddy combination since it’s so neutral it can be worn with other more bold colours – such as here, I’m wearing MAC Fluidline in the shade Waveline which is a navy blue. The lips look great but don’t distract from the eyeliner. I also wore it for a job interview (which I got, by the way!) since I wanted to look polished but not flashy.
Since both of these lip products are matte, they’re very long wearing – I like to wear these if I’m going to be eating and drinking. Both Whirl and Velvet Teddy if worn separately are long wearing and fade evenly as well. You probably don’t need to buy them both, but I like that I’ve got them. I haven’t bothered trying to overdraw my lips to make them look bigger, like Kylie does (or did, before she got fillers) but if you’re into that then I think this is a great pairing.
All in all, I’m very pleased to be the owner of MAC Velvet Teddy and Whirl despite the hit it took on my wallet! What do you think of these? Have you fallen for the hype yet – or is this post going to be what finally makes you rush out to your nearest MAC store? Let me know in the comments!
