Where to get nails done in Auckland and other questions

Artistic color gloss manicure

People quite often ask me for recommendations for various beauty services, such as hair and nails. So, today I’m rounding up a list of the places where I go for these services. This post will likely only be useful for those of you who live in Auckland, but maybe some of you will be visiting in the future, so it could come in handy. If you want to know the best place in Auckland to get your makeup done, or a wax – then this is the post for you!

Eyebrow waxing

I mostly maintain my eyebrows at home, but when I do need them to be reshaped I head to Off Wax and Laser in Takapuna. They also have salons in Newmarket and Britomart, however I’ve always gone to the Takapuna salon. The staff there are all great with brow shaping, and so friendly. I’ve had other waxing service done there too, and it’s always top quality, and very hygienic too.

Laser Hair Removal

This is another service I get from Off Wax and Laser, as you may have seen in my previous blog post about my laser hair removal experience. There aren’t many places in Auckland offering actual laser hair removal, although there are a lot of IPL hair removal places around. Laser is the cut above, and I totally recommend it.

Haircuts and Colouring

I have been getting my hair done at Amanda Baker Hair and Makeup for most of the last 6 years. Over that time I’ve seen a few different stylists but Kylie is always my favourite. I’ve had a lot of cuts, as well as getting highlights for a couple of years too. The salon is located in Browns Bay, and it’s a really nice location, refurbished in the last couple of years. Last year they added waxing and nail services as well, which is handy.

Makeup Artists

Visiting a counter is my usual method of choice for having someone else do my makeup, since the cost of the makeup application is redeemable on products. For example, at MAC, a makeup application will cost $90 but you can choose $90 worth of products to keep which is a great option. Most makeup brands offer this service but I find that the skill can be a little bit hit and miss across brands, some hire staff that are more like salespeople whereas MAC staff are generally very skilled makeup artists. For more information visit their website

Mecca Cosmetica also offers makeup application for $90, and it is also fully redeemable on product. The good thing about Mecca is that they offer a range of brands that are mostly not available elsewhere in New Zealand so you have the opportunity to try a variety of different products. To book with Mecca, visit their website.

The downside of using a makeup artist at a counter is that you have to go to them. If you’re wanting someone to come to you, such as for a wedding then you will want a mobile makeup artist. I have a few friends who are Auckland-based makeup artists, and they all do great work: Rebekah Banks, Nicola May, and Jordanne Leigh.

When I want to treat myself to a manicure, Blush Baby is where I head! Nicola is an incredible nail technician, with an amazing eye for creative designs. I also know her hygiene is top notch, unlike your average nail bar. I got a gel manicure by her recently, and everyone seemed to comment on them, from customers at work, to the checkout operator at the supermarket, and they were all amazed by how good they look.

Eyelash extensions

I get my eyelash extensions done by Michelle at Mai Beauty Lounge in Epsom. If you book using my code LENA20 during February 2017, you will save $20 off your full set of lash extensions, making them $60 down from $80. I also receive a small commission for referring customers to her.

So there you have it – my list of the best places in Auckland to get various beauty services! If you have any more questions about places to get things done, leave them in the comments section. If I can’t help you, I have lots of friends who are into beauty and in the industry, so I’m sure we’ll be able to come up with an answer. If you’re wondering, no, this post isn’t sponsored – the people/companies mentioned have no idea I’m even writing it, these are the genuine recommendations that I would give a friend 🙂
